July 23, 2007—Castleberry Food Co. expanded its recall of meat products to include more than 80 types of canned chili, beef stew, corned beef hash and other meat products.

Public health officials are concerned that the affected products may be linked to a botulism outbreak. Testing of canned hot dog chili sauce found 16 of 17 cans contaminated with botulism.

The Agriculture Department's Food Safety and Inspection Service reports an equipment malfunction at the Augusta, Georgia plant may be responsible for the contamination. Company officials speculate that the meat product was undercooked and therefore not sterilized.

July 18, 2007—The FDA announced a recall of certain brands of hot dog chili sauce after the products were linked to botulism. At least four people have been hospitalized.

The warning applies to 10-ounce cans of Castleberry's, Austex and Kroger hot dog chili sauce with "best by" dates from April 30, 2009 through May 22, 2009.

The FDA announced it is inspecting the Castleberry plant in Augusta, Georgia where the products were canned to identify the source of the contamination.
