Cereal Maker Recalls Unsweetened Puffed Rice, Puffed Wheat Cereals Due to Salmonella Contamination

April 5, 2008—Malt-O-Meal announced a recall of unsweetened Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat cereals as a result of salmonella contamination. The FDA reported at least 23 people in 14 states were sickened by the strain of salmonella associated with the two cereals.

The CDC reported salmonella illnesses in California, Colorado, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Dakota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.

The cereal is marketed under the following brand names:

  • Malt-O-Meal
  • Acme
  • America's Choice
  • Food Club
  • Giant
  • Hannaford
  • Jewel
  • Laura Lynn
  • Pathmark
  • Shaw's
  • ShopRite
  • Tops
  • Weis Quality

The cereals have a "best if used by" date from April 8, 2008 (APR0808) through March 18, 2009 (MAR1809).
